The Internet is the world's largest computer network. It's a global network of networks, or a inter-network, i.e. "Internet". The Internet is self-regulated and extends far beyond America's boundaries. Most of the world has some sort of access to the Internet. Full Internet access is enjoyed by the United States, Canada, most of South America, all of Australia, Asia, and Europe. The net's underlying technologies have given it flexibility, openness, and an enormous capacity for growth. The Internet is also a large social network, including tens of millions of people throughout the world.
All sorts of information, and a lot of it! Almost every company, organization, institution, and millions of individuals are interested in creating an "Internet Presence" especially on the World Wide Web. There are over 13 million Web pages alone, plus countless more Gopher sites, FTP sites, and other resources. Since literally anyone with an Internet account can put information online and because there is no central librarian to keep track of what's where, it can seem like an impossible task to actually locate material on the Internet. However, there are several tools to ease the pain of information retrieval. See How do I Find Information on the Internet?
The WWW is a way of organizing the Internet's information resources in such a way to enable their relatively easy retrieval and direct presentation on your computer screen. Also, WWW resources are linked together, so that you can click on words or pictures to go to related WWW resources. The word "Browsing" is generally used to describe this WWW interaction because it's so easy and inviting to wander from resource to resource.
AUP refers to an Acceptable Usage Policy for the control of Internet usage by students. Put simply, an AUP is a written agreement, signed by students, their parents, and teachers, outlining the terms and conditions of the school's Internet usage. It includes specifics on acceptable uses, rules of on-line behavior, and access privileges. Also covered are penalties for violations of the policy, including security violations and vandalism of the system. Signing an AUP is an anticipated requirement for any user of a school's Internet connection. Signatories are required to be informed that the AUP will be kept on file as a legal, binding document.
